What is Lunar New Year?

Lunar New Year, also known as Chinese New Year, marks the beginning of the lunar calendar and is celebrated in various Asian countries worldwide. It's a time of profound significance, symbolising renewal, family reunions, and the hope for prosperity in the upcoming year. The festivities typically last for several days, filled with many traditions including dragon dances, vibrant parades, fireworks, lantern festivals and games. People also celebrate by exchanging red envelopes with money as gifts for good fortune, and indulging in sumptuous feasts.

Why do we celebrate the Lunar New Year festival?

Embracing Lunar New Year cultivates cultural appreciation. It fosters unity among communities, and encourages reflection on traditions that encapsulate the richness of heritage, reinforcing familial ties and promoting goodwill. Celebrating this occasion allows us to honour the past, embrace diversity, and welcome a new chapter with happiness, optimism, and shared joy.

Celebrating Lunar New Year demonstrates inclusivity and respect for diverse cultures among employees. It fosters a sense of belonging and appreciation for different backgrounds within the workforce. Embracing cultural celebrations like Lunar New Year can also enhance employee morale and engagement by acknowledging and valuing their traditions and heritage.

Why do we use the term Lunar New Year instead of Chinese New Year?

Using the term "Lunar New Year" instead of "Chinese New Year" reflects a broader recognition of the holiday's significance across various cultures. While it's commonly associated with Chinese traditions, Lunar New Year is celebrated by multiple East Asian and Southeast Asian cultures. These include Korean, Vietnamese, and Tibetan communities, among others.

What about the calendar?

The lunar calendar, based on the cycles of the moon, determines the date of Lunar New Year. It differs each year in relation to the Gregorian calendar commonly used in the West. Hence, referring to it as Lunar New Year acknowledges its ties to lunar cycles and its celebration by multiple cultures beyond just China. This terminology helps embrace and honour the diverse ways in which different communities commemorate this significant occasion.

Block Printing and Calligraphy.

What is it? Block printing is an ancient method of printing text, images, or patterns. The technique involves carving a design into a block of wood, metal, or another material. Then, inking the surface, and pressing it onto paper or fabric. The raised parts of the block transfer the ink, creating a printed image. This technique is still widely used in East Asia, particularly in China and Japan, for printing books, textiles, and other artwork. Calligraphy is the art of producing beautiful handwriting. The technique focuses on the aesthetics of the letters and symbols, often created with specialised brushes. The art of calligraphy is popular among various cultures worldwide, but it is an especially important aspect of Chinese culture.

The workshop? Celebrate the Chinese culture this New Year! In this exciting holiday workshop, participants will learn the craft of traditional Chinese block printing and calligraphy. Participants will make at least four different prints and some calligraphy work. Participants will be able to take their work home and use it as a Lunar New Year decoration.
